MCA SELECTS OSAKA AS SITE FOR UNIVERSAL STUDIOS JAPAN; CONSTRUCTION ANTICIPATED TO BEGIN IN 1996

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- MCA INC., the operator of Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Florida, has agreed to join a consortium comprised of the city of Osaka and other Osaka-based companies for the purpose of developing Universal Studios Japan, it was announced today by Sid Sheinberg, president and chief operating officer, MCA INC.
Universal Studios Japan will be developed on a site of approximately 140 acres in the western section of the waterfront area of Konohana- ward.
Construction is projected to begin in 1996, with the opening date targeted for Spring 1999.
"We have been seeking to develop a studio facility and theme park in Japan for several years, but our enthusiasm depended on finding the right site," said Sheinberg. "When we were introduced to this region of Osaka, we recognized that our project would benefit from its prime location on the waterfront, excellent access conditions and linkages, and surrounding redevelopment projects. These advantages are enhanced by the strong cooperation and support we have received from the city government, industry and local landowners."
As envisioned, Universal Studios Japan will serve as the core entertainment attraction of a comprehensive area redevelopment program encompassing residential, business and leisure activities. Included among the participating industrial companies and landowners are: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.; Osaka Gas Co. Ltd.; Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd.; Sumitomo Corp.; Nisshin Steel Co. Ltd.; Hitachi Zosen Corp.; and Nishi-Nippon Railroad Co. Ltd.
Universal Studios Japan will be modeled after Universal Studios Florida, which has been visited by over 20 million people since it opened in Orlando in June 1990. In addition to a world class lineup of themed rides, shows and attractions, Universal Studios Japan will feature a state-of-the-art motion picture and television production facility. The Rank Organisation, MCA's joint venture partner in Universal Studios Florida, may participate in Universal Studios Japan.
In addition, the consortium will study the possibility of developing immediately adjacent property as a complete urban resort, with themed shopping, dining, entertainment and hotels.
"Universal Studios Japan will benefit from the strong and expanding leisure demand in Japan and will significantly impact the development of the area's basic urban infrastructure, attracting to its periphery the new wave of high technology, communications and media industries," said Frank Stanek, president of MCA Enterprises International. "This, in combination with the anticipated leisure/entertainment and residential development, will ultimately result in a fully-realized 'multimedia district,' serving the business and industry community in addition to being a major tourism destination for the region."
