MAZDA TO EXPORT U.S.-BUILT 626 MODELS TO EUROPE

FLAT ROCK, Mich., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Mazda (North America), Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Mazda Motor Corporation, today announced that it will begin exporting U.S.-built Mazda 626 models to Europe at the end of this year. The cars slated for export to Europe will be produced in Flat Rock at AutoAlliance International, Inc., a 50-50 joint venture between Mazda Motor Corporation and Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F).
The initial 626 exports will be to Germany, and the export model will be a four-door sedan equipped with a four-cylinder, two-liter engine and five-speed, manual transmission. Annual export volume for the car is expected to be 10,000 units.
The U.S.-built 626 models will differ from models built in Japan in that the U.S. models will offer both driver- and passenger-side airbags and bumpers that meet U.S. five-mile-per-hour standards. The U.S. models also have different seat and instrument panel designs.
"This is an exciting prospect for us," said Yoshihiro Wada, president of Mazda Motor Corporation. "Our U.S.-built cars are competitive with any others in their class, anywhere in the world. And the addition of U.S.-built models will expand the range of choices for customers in Europe."
The U.S.-made Mazda 626 models are built by UAW workers and are more than 75 percent domestic content. As such, they are expected to be classified as a domestic fleet under the CAFE formula used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The Mazda 626 and MX-6 models built in Flat Rock are also exported to Canada and Taiwan. Last year Mazda exported 10,000 to Canada and about 2,000 vehicles to Taiwan.
Mazda (North America), Inc. serves as an intermediary among Mazda's U.S. manufacturing, marketing and research and development operations. The company employs over 250 people at offices in Flat Rock; Irvine, Calif.; Washington; and Miami and Jacksonville, Fla.
