MAZDA ANNOUNCES VOLUNTARY RECALL

 MAZDA ANNOUNCES VOLUNTARY RECALL
IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Mazda today announced a

voluntary recall of 16,688 1990-model MX-5 Miatas for the inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the catalytic converter in the vehicle's emission control system.
Mazda has found that on certain 1990 Mazda MX-5 Miatas manufactured between March 1989 and August 1989, the heat expansive mat holding the catalyst may become dislodged, allowing it to vibrate. If the vehicle is operated under this condition, the catalyst may eventually wear out, which could impair the ability of the converter to reduce vehicle emissions.
Owners of the affected vehicles are being asked by mail to bring their vehicles to an authorized Mazda dealer for the inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the catalytic converter. The procedure takes approximately one hour and will be performed free of charge.
Owners in California will be issued a "Proof of Correction" certificate upon completion of the repair. This certificate should be retained by the customer in the event that the California Department of Motor Vehicles requests proof of correction prior to renewing the registration on the vehicle.
