MAYTAG EXPECTS ENHANCED PERFORMANCE IN 1993

NEWTON, Iowa, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The strength of Maytag Corporation's (NYSE: MYG) brands, coupled with its new marketing approach and improving economic factors in the United States, should enhance the firm's performance in 1993.
In the corporation's 1992 annual report mailed to shareowners yesterday, Chairman and CEO Leonard A. Hadley said, "Maytag is beginning to benefit from the capital investments made in plants and products over the past several years. We believe both sales and profits will improve in 1993, buoyed by our new integrated sales approach, new product introductions, increased consumer confidence and growth in home construction."
Effective the first of this year, Maytag streamlined its U.S. major appliance marketing into two organizations. One direct-to-dealer field sales force is selling the Maytag and Admiral brands and the other team is marketing the Jenn-Air and Magic Chef brands.
Discussing the move, Hadley said, "Each sales organization now has both an upper-priced line and a middle-priced line of products to offer dealers. This will strengthen our brands in the marketplace, improve operating efficiencies and enhance long-term growth and profitability.
In 1992, redesigned Maytag brand dishwashers started flowing off the assembly line at the corporation's new, highly advanced dishwasher plant. Hadley said, "Sales of these dishwashers have been exceptionally strong, exceeding our expectations, and later this year we will market distinctively designed Jenn-Air, Magic Chef and Admiral dishwashers produced at the new plant."
Hadley also pointed out that the multimillion dollar renovation of production facilities at Magic Chef and the total redesign of their ranges was completed in 1992. He said, "The new ranges are of exceptionally high quality and have been well received by consumers. We are confident of a similar enthusiastic reception for the new Maytag and Admiral brand ranges that will be introduced this year." With regard to the corporation's floor care business, Hadley said that despite competitive challenges Hoover North America remains number one in the U.S. and the company is continuing to introduce innovative new models.
Overseas, Maytag's Hoover Europe division experienced a loss in 1992, but Hadley said definitive action is being taken this year to phase out production at a vacuum cleaner manufacturing plant in France. He added that steps to streamline sales, marketing, administrative and distribution operations in Europe are continuing.
Maytag Corporation is a leading appliance enterprise focused on five principal areas of home management: Laundry, cooking, dishwashing, refrigeration and floor care. Vending equipment is an additional business.
The corporation's appliance brands include Maytag, Hoover, Jenn-Air, Magic Chef and Admiral. Dixie-Narco is the corporation's vending equipment manufacturer. Headquartered in Newton, Iowa, Maytag Corporation has 21 manufacturing operations in seven countries and approximately 21,500 employees worldwide.
