MAYTAG CONDUCTS SITE LOCATION STUDY FOR ADDITIONAL WASHER PRODUCTION

NEWTON, Iowa, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Maytag Corporation (NYSE: MYG) announced today it has initiated a study of its laundry manufacturing facilities in Newton, Iowa, and Herrin, Ill., to determine where it would be most economical to produce a newly designed clothes washer. The new unit would be in addition to those of current design.
According to Leonard A. Hadley, Maytag chairman and CEO, "The driving force behind the necessity of a new washer design is anticipated future government regulations dealing with reduced water and electric use. Although we will continue to make energy improvements in washers of the current design, all of us in the industry eventually must come up with an alternative product that will offer customers even greater energy saving."
Discussing the study, Hadley said, "In today's highly competitive major appliance industry, when consideration is being given to manufacturing a new product, one of the first things you need to know is where you can build that product most economically and exactly what your per unit costs will be.
"Maytag has two laundry manufacturing plants, both of which are viable options for additional washer production. Regardless of the location we choose, initially we will be adding 100 to 200 jobs and making additional capital investment at the facility."
The site location study is being conducted by a team composed of Maytag representatives from the Newton and Herrin manufacturing operations and certain corporate staff people.
Hadley said that during the study, information will be gathered from union officials and management representatives at each location to determine what employment and production costs would be. Additionally, Maytag representatives will be visiting with state and local government officials in Iowa and Illinois to determine what economic development funds and other assistance would be available.
Hadley said he would like to see the economic feasibility study completed by yearend. He added that the production timetable for the new washer has not been established.
Maytag is a leading appliance enterprise focused on five principal areas of home management: laundry, cooking, dishwashing, refrigeration and floor care. Vending equipment is an additional corporate business. The corporation's appliance brands include Maytag, Hoover, Jenn-Air, Magic Chef and Admiral. Headquartered in Newton, Iowa, Maytag has 21 manufacturing operations in seven countries and approximately 21,000 employees worldwide.
