MAYTAG ANNOUNCES NEW CFO

 NEWTON, Iowa, Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- John P. Cunningham Jr., an executive with 30 years of experience with IBM, will join Maytag Corporation (NYSE: MYG) as executive vice president and chief financial officer effective Jan. 1, succeeding Jerry A. Schiller who retired on Oct. 31. He will report to Leonard A. Hadley, Maytag's chairman and chief executive officer.
 "I am very pleased to have John Cunningham join our top management team. His experience in domestic and international financial markets will be a tremendous asset to our organization," commented Hadley.
 Cunningham, 56, has been vice president and assistant general manager for IBM's mainframe division since 1992 with responsibility for the long range budgeting, accounting and manufacturing planning for that sector.
 Prior to that he was a member of IBM's Europe Executive Committee in Paris, which handled all financial, tax and treasury functions for the IBM subsidiary.
 Before joining the Europe Executive Committee, Cunningham was vice president and corporate controller at IBM's headquarters in New York from 1988 to 1990. He also spent four years as vice president and assistant general manager of technology products from 1984 to 1988. Prior to that he held numerous financial positions with the firm's Small Systems, Latin America Far East and Office Products divisions.
 A native of New York City, he holds a master's degree in international finance from New York University and received a bachelor's degree in finance and accounting from Fordham University, Bronx, N.Y. Cunningham and his wife have four children.
