MAYBERRY'S THELMA LOU AMONG JUDGES FOR JACK DANIEL'S BARBECUE

MAYBERRY'S THELMA LOU AMONG JUDGES FOR JACK DANIEL'S BARBECUE
LYNCHBURG, Tenn., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- It's not Mayberry, but for Thelma Lou, coming to Lynchburg on an autumn Saturday will be the next best thing.
Actress Betty Lynn, who played Barney's favorite girl Thelma Lou on the popular Andy Griffith Show, heads a list of more than 30 celebrity and amateur judges in the Fourth Annual Jack Daniel World Championship Invitational Barbecue on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Lynn and company will taste and judge the servings offered by more than 30 championship barbecue teams from across the country in the town that's home to the world famous Jack Daniel Distillery. Teams will be judged in the following categories: Jack Daniel Sauce, pork ribs, whole hog and pork shoulder.
Others on the distinguished panel of celebrity judges include former Dallas Cowboy fullback Scott Laidlaw, who knows something about beef; Ardie Davis, author of Kansas City BBQ Pocket Guide, who will also administer the oath of office to the judges; Janet Figg, senior food editor of Better Homes and Gardens; Bob Lape of New York City, noted food journalist and broadcaster on WABC Radio; and Charlie Vergos, owner of Memphis' Rendezvous Restaurant, a famous rib eatery known throughout the country.
The amateur judges were selected from entries from across the country who answered Jack Daniel's call for volunteers and wrote the distillery listing their qualifications. "Everyone who wrote seemed qualified and experienced in the art of barbecuing," said Frank "Frog" Bobo, the barbecue's pitmaster and Jack Daniel's retired Master Distiller. "It was tough selecting about 15 amateur judges out of some 200 entries. We've got judges from all walks of life...from a surgeon in New York City, to a college president, to a lieutenant colonel in the Army."
While Lynn has never judged a barbecue contest, she acquired an early taste for it having grown up in the barbecue hotbed of Kansas City, Mo. "As a youngster my grandfather would take me downtown to the bank," she fondly recalled. "We would stop at this eatery that served good barbecue. We'd sit up on these high stools and eat their barbecue beef sandwiches. It was a real treat to do this and that barbecue smelled wonderful."
Lynn has never lived in a small town like Lynchburg. "I guess the closest I've ever come to living in a small town was Mayberry." She'll probably experience the "Mayberry" feeling -- along with the many visitors -- when she gets to Lynchburg, with its town square, stately courthouse and folks sitting on the benches talking and whittling.
"Through the years we've had visitors tell us coming to Lynchburg is like stepping into Mayberry," said Bobo. "Lynchburg residents -- all 361 of us -- always have time for visitors. We're proud to show off our small town hospitality. We will make Ms. Lynn and all the judges feel right at home. We might even give them a chance to sit around and whittle if they'd like. I bet Ms. Lynn will love our gazebo on the town square. Couldn't you just see Thelma Lou and Barney sittin' there on a breezy afternoon holdin' hands?"
On barbecue day Lynchburg will offer visitors a full slate of small town, family-style activities -- reminiscent of Mayberry. The day begins with a 100-mile Hills and Hollow Bike Ride at 8 a.m. (registration starts at 7 a.m. at the Moore County High School), followed by an antique car show, pig races, country dog contest, rolling pin toss, ghost storytelling at Motlow Cave, lawn tractor pull, good music, fried pies and golden-roasted corn.
Folks will also be able to tour Jack Daniel Distillery, the oldest registered distillery in the United States (Est. 1866).
