MAYBELLINE REPORTS RESULTS

MEMPHIS, Tenn., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Maybelline, Inc. (NYSE: MAY) today announced net sales of $306,963,000 for the year ended Dec. 31, 1992, reflecting a 20.5 percent increase over net sales of $254,678,000 in 1991.
Unaudited figures show net sales for the fourth quarter of 1992 were $77,374,000, up 8.8 percent over $71,109,000 for the previous year. During the fourth quarter, a 17 percent gain in the Maybelline cosmetics business was offset by promotional timing differences for the Yardley brand, which had received heavy seasonal promotion in the year-ago period.
For the full year the company posted a loss of $1,985,000 after certain non-recurring and extraordinary items. Excluding these items, and after normalizing interest expense, 1992 net income would have amounted to $18,756,000, or $1.05 per share, up 30.7 percent over $14,352,000, or 80 cents per share in 1991. For the fourth quarter net income would have amounted to $4,511,000, or 25 cents per share, up 27.2 percent over $3,546,000, or 20 cents per share in the fourth quarter 1991.
Maybelline stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Dec. 11, 1992, with an initial public offering of 5,347,500 shares of common stock. Subsequent to the offering, the average number of shares outstanding totaled 17,923,690.
Maybelline President and CEO Robert N. Hiatt attributed the year's record net sales to the continued success of the company's marketing and sales programs. "As 1992 began, Maybelline initiated a massive restage of the cosmetics brand, with new packaging and improved formulas supported by a new and innovative advertising campaign, 'Maybe She's Born With It. Maybe It's Maybelline,'" Hiatt said. "We continue to be pleased with the trade and consumer response to our programs. Both increased sales and increased market share provide us with confirmation that the Maybelline restage is changing the consumer image of the brand to be more upscale and fashionable."
Looking ahead to 1993, Hiatt said the company will continue to pursue a three-part growth-oriented strategy to strengthen its position with mass-market personal care products. "Our strategic business plan has proved to be right on track, and for 1993 we will continue to increase consumer demand for Maybelline cosmetics, build the recently- acquired Yardley brand, and expand distribution in international markets," Hiatt said.
Headquartered in Memphis, Maybelline, Inc. is a leader in the mass-market color cosmetics business, manufacturing and marketing Eye, Face, Lip and Nail cosmetics and other personal care products for sale in the United States and in selected international markets. The company markets its products under such well-recognized brand names as Great Lash, Expert Eyes, Moisture Whip, Revitalizing, Shades of You, Shine Free and Yardley of London.
