MAY DEPARTMENT STORES COMPANY REPORTS SALES OF $991 MILLION FOR NOVEMBER
 ST. LOUIS, Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE: MA) today reported preliminary sales of $991.1 million for the four-week period ended Nov. 30, a decrease of 1.7 percent from sales of $1.01 billion during the same period last year. The comparison to last year's period is negatively impacted by a shift in the calendar. The November 1991 reporting period ended with Thanksgiving weekend while the similar period last year included the first full week of the Christmas season.
 Year-to-date sales for the first ten months of fiscal 1991 were $8.24 billion, up 6.5 percent from sales of $7.73 billion reported in the same period last year.
 November sales for the department store segment were $878.4 million, down 3.4 percent or $31.1 million from last year. Sales for Payless ShoeSource totaled $112.7 million, an increase of 14.6 percent or $14.3 million.

 (A) -- Store-for-store sales represent sales of those stores open during both years.
 Sales of the Thalhimers department store company have been included since November 1990. Sales have been restated to exclude the sales of stores which have been closed and not replaced. Year-to-date sales, including nonreplaced closed stores, were $8.24 billion in fiscal 1991 and $7.80 billion in fiscal 1990.
 The May Department Stores Company is one of the largest retailers in the United States, operating 333 department stores and 3,205 Payless ShoeSource stores.
