MAXUS ENERGY FILES SHELF REGISTRATION FOR $500 MILLION OF SECURITIES

DALLAS, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Maxus Energy Corporation (NYSE: MXS) today filed a shelf registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission covering a combination of debt securities, preferred stock and common stock with an aggregate offering price of up to $500 million.
The proceeds from any sale of securities covered by the registration statement will be available for general corporate purposes, which may include the repayment of approximately $67 million of outstanding medium-term notes maturing in 1993 and 1994 and the mandatory redemption of $125 million of $9.75 preferred stock due in 1994 and 1995.
Other uses of the proceeds may include the repurchase or redemption of $225 million of other debentures, depending on market conditions.
"This shelf registration gives the company the ability to respond quickly to favorable market conditions. In particular, this filing allows us to take advantage of opportunities for refinancing our existing debt, including our maturing medium-term notes, at lower interest rates and for meeting our preferred stock redemption obligations," said Mike Barron, vice president and chief financial officer.
Dallas-based Maxus Energy is a large independent oil and gas exploration and production company with operations in 13 countries, including the U.S.
