MATT GAVE ME AN ELL OF A SHOCK.

LEICESTER CITY prospect Stuart Campbell has spoken of his woe for mentor Matt Elliott whose moment of madness has left his international career in tatters.

Scotland Under-21 midfielder Campbell was back home in Corby last Saturday watching the clash with the Faroe Islands on TV when Elliott lost the plot and slapped Todi Jonsson.

But Campbell, who earned his 14th cap in the 3-2 defeat by the Czech Republic in Teplice on Tuesday, insists the shamed Cockney shouldn't be vilified despite the hefty price Scotland paid in that awful 1-1 draw.

Stuart stressed: "It's not in Matt's nature to lash out the way he is alleged to have done.

"His disciplinary record is great for a centre-half and as far as I'm aware he's never been sent off for Leicester.

"He doesn't even get booked often and Matt's a good pro to look up to."

Campbell, who made 15 City first team appearances last season, has a dad from Glasgow and a mum from Greenock and he's proud of his roots.

Stuart, who's on a three-year deal at Filbert Street, said: "I've learned a lot from Matt and players like Robbie Savage of Wales, Sweden's Pontus Kamark, America's Kasey Keller and Frank Sinclair who plays for Jamaica.

"There's wide influence here but I'm still proud to be part of the Scottish colony beside Matt, our No.2 John Robertson and chief scout Jim Melrose."
