MATIF PRODUCTS START TRADING ON GLOBEX

NEW YORK, March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The following press release was issued today in Paris by MATIF, Marche a Terme International de France.
Globex(R) is the global after-hours electronic trading system for futures and options developed initially for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) by Reuters Holdings PLC (NASDAQ: RTRSY) and launched in June 1992.
On Friday, March 12, the off-hour electronic system Globex will start trading MATIF products in Paris, New York and Chicago.
Globex is a worldwide electronic trading system, that was initiated by two associated exchanges, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), of which MATIF is a participating exchange. These three exchanges alone represent 72 percent of the total volume traded by the world's seven largest futures markets. This critical mass is a decisive success factor for the creation of a global market.
Globex is designed to take over open-outcry trading outside exchange opening hours. This time slot already attracts substantial interest, representing 12 percent (i.e. 6.7 million contracts) of the total volume cleared by MATIF SA in 1992.
Aside from allowing its members to trade their products on off- trading hours, Globex offers them access to the products of participating exchanges. Initially this facility is offered to MATIF and CME members on a total reciprocity basis and will soon be extended to CBOT contracts for the operators' own account trades. Reuters is the system technical operator.
Globex started operating on June 25, 1992. MATIF contracts will be gradually introduced in the following order: three-month Pibor and Ecu (future and option) on March 12, 1993; Notional (future and option) and French Treasury Bond two weeks later; CAC 40 (future) two weeks later.
About 80 terminals have been set up by Paris market members and 300 worldwide.
