MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY JOINT VENTURE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN PRATT & WHITNEY AND UKRAINE'S PATON INSTITUTE

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Pratt & Whitney (P&W) has established a joint venture with the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute, Academy of Sciences of the Ukraine.
The venture, called "Pratt & Whitney-Paton Research Center," will be based in Kiev, Ukraine, and will conduct joint research activities in new materials technology using high rate electron beam deposition processing. This processing is an advanced technique developed by the E.O. Paton Institute.
Electron beams are used to melt metals and non-metals to a vapor in a vacuum. The vapor can then be condensed as coatings or as tailored metal structures. The process is unique in that it has successfully reached high rates of evaporation commensurate with low cost production.
The efforts of the Ukrainian and American researchers working in this Center will be directed to the development of new metallic and ceramic materials and their practical application. "Having combined the knowledge and practical experience of our researchers, we shall have new outstanding results," said Academician B. Paton, director of the institute, when signing the Agreement on the establishment of the Joint Venture.
"The Paton Institute is renowned for its work in welding and space fabrications," said Dr. Bill G.W. Yee, director of P&W Materials Engineering. "Less renowned, until recently, has been its work in the field of electron beam vapor condensation of structural components and its adaptation to the production of products," he added.
The technology is important to Pratt & Whitney for application in its gas turbine and space propulsion products. Two key areas of research will be titanium structures and air-coooled turbine airfoils. "We expect the venture will develop new materials and methods of processing components thus reducing production costs while improving performance of our company's jet engines and rockets," Dr. Yee said.
In addition to continuing research of electron beam processing, the center will be involved in training specialists, publishing joint articiles, filing joint patents and fabricating test samples and prototype components for use in advanced engine designs.
In 1994, the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute will celebrate its 60th anniversary. Initially, the Institute was only working in the field of welding. Now its interests encompass welding, coating, new technologies and materials. The E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute is a research center, consisting of a research institute, design technological bureau, and several pilot plants.
Pratt & Whitney Materials Engineering is located in East Hartford, Conn., and West Palm Beach, Fla., and is a recognized world leader in aerospace materials and materials processing technologies. P&W is a division of United Technologies, a corporation with strong technical capabilities in the materials arena as well as its commercial and industrial products. United Technologies Corporation is based in Hartford, Conn.
