MASTERCARD NOW ACCEPTED IN 220 COUNTRIES & TERRITORIES; NEW REPUBLICANS OF EASTERN EUROPE, TURKEY & CENTRAL ASIA PUT MASTERCARD OVER MILESTONE

NEW YORK, Nov. 17 ~PRNewswire~ -- If you were to fly a flag for every country and territory in which MasterCard is now accepted, you would have more flags than currently fly in front of the United Nations building.
While 179 nations belong to the U.N., and while the membership status of an additional 10 non-self governing territories is currently being discussed, MasterCard acceptance locations can be found in 220 countries and territories.
 Credit Card Association Milestone Reached
Vaulting MasterCard beyond the "number 200" milestone of credit card acceptance among countries and territories -- the first time a credit card association can make that claim -- were the new Central Asia Republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
And across the former Soviet Union, now broken into an array of newly formed or newly independent nations -- Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania and Russia among them -- international travelers can make purchases, use ATM machines and secure cash advances with their MasterCard.
From Albania to Zimbabwe, from Aruba to Uzbekistan and from Angola to the Ukraine, MasterCard acceptance locations now number 10.3 million worldwide -- including locations in Switzerland, Monaco and Vatican City, three states that are not U.N. members.
"Today, with borders falling faster than ever before and with emerging new countries hopelessly outdating even the latest atlases, MasterCard has moved swiftly and aggressively to establish its presence and undergird the international value of card membership for its users," explained Alex W. "Pete" Hart, president and CEO of MasterCard International.
"Enlarging our international base has been a prime objective," added Hart. "By working closely with both the government and business communities across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America, we have been able to expand our reach and significantly enhance the value of MasterCard ownership."
