MARY STEENBURGEN SET TO STAR IN MGM'S 'A SUMMER STORY'
CULVER CITY, Calif., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Academy Award-winning actress Mary Steenburgen has been set to star with Charles Grodin and Kieran Culkin in MGM's "A Summer Story." A follow-up to the perennial holiday favorite "A Christmas Story," "A Summer Story" takes another glimpse into the lives of the Parker family. Steenburgen and Grodin play the parents of a young boy (Culkin) who goes through a rite of passage during one memorable summer. One of the most respected actresses of her generation, Steenburgen won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for the comedy hit "Melvin and Howard." She was also honored with an Emmy nomination for her television debut in "The Attic: The Hiding of Anne Frank." Most recently, she completed work on three prestigious projects: Jonathan Demme's "Philadelphia," also starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, due out in December; Lasse Hallstrom's "Gilbert Grape," opposite Johnny Depp, scheduled for release in October; and the Broadway play "Candida," by George Bernard Shaw, which just completed a six-week run. Her other notable film credits include "Back to the Future, Part III," "Cross Creek" and "Ragtime." Reuniting the creative team behind "A Christmas Story," "A Summer Story" will be directed by Bob Clark and produced by Rene DuPont from a screenplay by Clark, Jean Shepherd and Leigh Brown. The film is scheduled to begin principal photography in August. -0- 5/13/93 /CONTACT: Nancy Willen of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 310-280-6168/
