MARY McDONNELL JOINS CAST OF SNEAKERS' UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Academy Award-
nominee Mary McDonnell has joined Robert Redford, Ben Kingsley, River Phoenix and Dan Aykroyd in the ensemble cast of Universal Pictures' "Sneakers," which has begun principal photography in San Francisco. Phil Alden Robinson is directing from a script he wrote with Walter Parkes and Lawrence Lasker, who also serve as producers.
"Sneakers," Robinson's first project since the Academy Award- nominated "Field of Dreams," is a caper film about a fugitive student radical from the '60s, now running a legitimate security business, whose past catches up with him when he is blackmailed by the government into using his team of experts for a covert operation. "Sneakers" refers to people who are hired to break into places to test their security. McDonnell plays a bank executive who comes to the aid of the sneakers team. McDonnell received an Oscar nomination for her role as Stands with a Fist in last year's highly acclaimed, "Dances with Wolves." She has worked steadily as a stage actress for the past 12 years, debuting in Sam Shepard's "Buried Child," and most recently playing the title role of "The Heidi Chronicles" on Broadway. Her film credits include "Matewan," "Tiger Warsaw" and the upcoming "Grand Canyon." Universal has scheduled "Sneakers" for release in 1992. -0- 11/1/91 /CONTACT: Alan Sutton of Universal Pictures, 818-777-1293/ CO: Universal Pictures ST: California IN: ENT SU: KJ-CH -- LA019 -- 0333 11/01/91 15:39 EST
