MARTIN MARIETTA WINS NEW NAVY WORK VALUED AT $269 MILLION
BETHESDA, Md., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Martin Marietta Corporation (NYSE: ML) has received a production contract and option totaling $269 million from the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command.
Under terms of the contract, Martin Marietta will supply 15 Vertical Launching Systems (VLS) to the U.S. Navy and for a foreign military sale to Japan. The corporation also received a production option for seven additional systems for the United States and Japan.
Martin Marietta Aero & Naval Systems in Middle River, Md., will assemble, test, install and provide support for the launching systems, which are aboard Ticonderoga, Spruance and Arleigh Burke- class surface ships.
The contract for the Martin Marietta-developed system calls for production to begin immediately with deliveries through 1996. With this award, Martin Marietta has received orders and options for 77 VLS systems with a total program value exceeding $2 billion. Approximately 300 people are currently employed on the VLS program.
The VLS, capable of launching a variety of surface, anti-air and anti-submarine missiles, exceeds customer reliability requirements and was deployed during Operation Desert Storm, performing more than 175 missions without a single failure.
"As the primary launching system for naval missiles, VLS has been a core business for our corporation for more than 10 years," said A. Thomas Young, president and chief operating officer of Martin Marietta. "It supports one key element of our long-term growth strategy for the 1990s, which is to focus on advanced-technology defense systems that fulfill critical customer requirements."
Martin Marietta-produced VLS launchers also are being installed aboard Canadian Tribal-class destroyers. Other allied nations considering VLS include Australia, New Zealand and Germany.
