MARTIN MARIETTA TO UPGRADE GRIPEN FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM

BETHESDA, Md., June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Martin Marietta Corporation (NYSE: ML) has been selected to design, develop and manufacture the improved flight control computer for the Saab Scania AB/Swedish Air Force JAS 39 Gripen fighter.
The computer will include a 32-bit processor for the Gripen's full- authority, digital, fly-by-wire flight control system. Receiving and analyzing input from the pilot and various sensors on the Gripen, the computer will direct the movement of the plane's control surfaces. The Martin Marietta computer also will provide autopilot, autothrottle and airbrake functions.
Designated the JAS 39 Flight Control Electronics Assembly-Upgrade, the computer will be produced by Martin Marietta Aircraft Control Systems in Johnson City, N.Y., which also provides the electronic controls for the Gripen's GE/Volvo Flygmotor RM12 engines.
In addition, Martin Marietta Aircraft Control supplies flight control systems for the F/A-18 fighter, B-2 bomber, C-17 transport and V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft.
The Gripen is Sweden's lightweight combat aircraft designed to perform the fighter, attack and reconnaissance missions. The Swedish government has indicated it will purchase 140 Gripen aircraft, which also will be offered for export sales.
