MARTIN MARIETTA RECEIVES $70 MILLION CONTRACT FOR LAUNCHING SYSTEMS
BETHESDA, Md., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Martin Marietta Corporation (NYSE: ML) has been awarded a $70 million contract to supply Vertical Launching Systems for service in allied navies.
Under the U.S. Navy foreign military sales contract, Martin Marietta will provide the shipboard launching systems for four German ships and 10 launchers for the Australia/New Zealand alliance known as ANZAC. The launchers will be the first to accommodate the new Seasparrow missile for short-range air defense. Future systems will include four evolved Seasparrow missiles in a single container, dramatically increasing defensive firepower capability.
The Vertical Launching System, a below-deck system installed on destroyers and cruisers, was deployed and used successfully by U.S. ships during Operation Desert Storm. The system can launch multiple surface-to-air, surface-to-surface and anti-submarine missiles.
The work will be performed by Martin Marietta Aero & Naval Systems at Baltimore, in conjunction with international teammate FMC. This is Martin Marietta's second major award this year for the launching systems. The first contract, awarded in January, had a value of more than $200 million.
In addition to U.S. ships, the Vertical Launching System also is being installed aboard Canadian and Japanese vessels under U.S. Navy contracts.
