MARTIN MARIETTA DEFENDS ALLEGATIONS BROUGHT BY HERCULES
DENVER, Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Martin Marietta said today it will vigorously defend the corporation against grossly exaggerated and meritless allegations that are contained in a lawsuit filed by Hercules Inc. in Federal District Court in Utah.
The suit arises from Hercules' performance as a subcontractor to Martin Marietta on the Solid Rocket Motor Upgrade (SRMU) program for the Air Force's Titan IV launch vehicle. Hercules has experienced several accidents and schedule delays during the program's development.
"We are extremely disappointed that Hercules has chosen to take this action. However, we are committed to making the SRMU program a success. Our top priority continues to be maintaining Titan IV's outstanding reliability and performance record," said Peter B. Teets, president of Martin Marietta's Astronautics Group.
"Despite the problems Hercules has had, the program is now technically sound and we will continue to expect Hercules to meet its contractual obligations," Teets added.
Hercules was awarded the contract to develop and produce the SRMUs in 1987 on the basis of a competitive bid. The SRMU will improve the Titan IV's reliability and payload capability, an Air Force requirement that followed the space shuttle Challenger accident.
The Astronautics Group provides advanced technology products and services for our nation's space and defense requirements. Headquartered in Denver, the group also has operations at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. and Cape Canaveral, Fla.
