MARRIOTT PLANS CARIBBEAN EXPANSION, WILL MANAGE NEW RESORT IN ARUBA

WASHINGTON, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Marriott will expand its Caribbean presence with the addition of the 413-room Aruba Marriott Resort and Casino to its management portfolio. The hotel is expected to open in early 1995.
Located on the northwest coast of Aruba, approximately 3.5 miles northwest of Oranjestad, the capital city, and 7 miles northwest of Queen Beatrix International Airport, the Aruba Marriott Resort and Casino is owned by Plant Hotel N.V., a subsidiary of the Nationale Investeringsbank, N.V., of the Netherlands.
"Marriott has long-wanted to expand its presence in the Caribbean," said Jim Sullivan, senior vice president-development, Marriott Lodging. "The addition to our portfolio of the Aruba Marriott Resort and Casino, which has been under development for more than two years, will bring added synergy to our existing hotels in the region," added Nick Ward, managing director, Marriott Development Group.
"We welcome the opportunity to play an active role in the revitalization of tourism in the Caribbean," said Ed Fuller, senior vice president and managing director, Marriott Lodging International. "We are very impressed by the popularity of Aruba as a vacation destination especially among U.S. travelers and by the strong support the government of Aruba has given tourism development."
The Aruba Marriott Resort and Casino is situated on a 10-acre site offering 600 feet of beach frontage and sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea. One mile north of the site, an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones championship golf course is under construction. To the northeast, approximately 1/4-mile away, a 10-court, Stan Smith-designed tennis/health complex is being developed. Both will be in operation when the Aruba Marriott Resort and Casino is completed.
The hotel will feature an 8-story atrium containing an enclosed glass lobby, a 10,500-square-foot casino, a 5,290-square-foot ballroom and six floors of guest rooms. The north tower will house two restaurants and guest rooms. Additional meeting rooms, a health club and the balance of the guest rooms will comprise the south tower.
Marriott currently has four properties in the Caribbean: the Marriott CasaMagna Cancun Resort in Mexico, Marriott's Sam Lord's Castle Resort in Barbados, and Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Resort and Morning Star Beach Resort in St. Thomas, the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The Marriott lodging system currently consists of more than 750 hotels offering in excess of 170,000 rooms among its four hotel brands; 43 of these properties are located outside the United States.
