MARRIOTT NAMED TO MANAGE FIVE-STAR HOTEL IN KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA

WASHINGTON, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Marriott has been named to manage a 515-room, deluxe hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which is scheduled to open in early 1996. It will be Marriott's first hotel in Malaysia.
The hotel is located in the city's shopping district on Jalan Bukit Bintang within Kuala Lumpur's Golden Triangle. The Kuala Lumpur Marriott will be part of the U.S.$150 million Star Hill Centre being developed by Taiping Consolidated Berhad, a company listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. This is a mixed-use development which will also include a six-level, 500,000-square-foot retail mall and underground parking for approximately 1,300 cars. C.K. Tang of Singapore will anchor the retail mall.
The Kuala Lumpur Marriott Hotel is being developed by Taiping Consolidated Berhad's wholly owned subsidiary, Punca Makmur Sdn. Bhd. as a joint venture with Invescor Ventures Sdn. Bhd. Invescor Ventures Sdn. Bhd. is held jointly by Siam Syntech Construction Co. Ltd. of Thailand and Lee Kim Tah (Pte.) and Woh Hup (Pte.) of Singapore.
"Marriott is delighted by the strategic alliance it has formed with Taiping Consolidated Berhad and Invescor Ventures as well as by the potential this hotel offers in Malaysia's expanding economy," said Ed Fuller, senior vice president and managing director of Marriott Lodging International.
"We look forward to bringing the best of Marriott's hospitality skills and experience to Malaysia while capitalizing on Taiping Consolidated Berhad's strong local knowledge and real estate development expertise. Further, we are confident the Kuala Lumpur Marriott Hotel will contribute immeasurably as Malaysia assumes an increasingly important role in the Asia/Pacific region."
"I am very excited with the entry of Marriott into Malaysia's fast-growing hospitality industry. I am sure that the Kuala Lumpur Marriott Hotel will be a landmark in Kuala Lumpur and will meet the country's goal in making Malaysia one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the region," said Dato' Suleiman Manan, executive chairman of Taiping Consolidated Berhad.
The Kuala Lumpur Marriott Hotel will offer an array of services including three executive floors and a lounge; a 20,000-square-foot, world-class health club with outdoor swimming pool; a 24-hour business center with full secretarial services; a 10,700-square-foot ballroom and 7,000 square feet of additional meeting space; and underground parking for 500 cars. The hotel will also include three restaurants and a lobby lounge.
Marriott currently has 41 hotels in 19 countries in its portfolio of properties outside the United States. In all, the company's lodging system encompasses 750 properties across its four brands: upscale Marriott Hotels, Resorts & Suites; moderately priced Courtyard by Marriott; economy minded Fairfield Inn; and hotels for the extended stay traveler, Residence Inn.
Marriott has embarked on an aggressive development program to have 100 hotels outside the United States by the year 2000. Later this year, Marriott will open a 235-room hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and construction is scheduled to start on the 436-room J W Marriott Jakarta Hotel in Indonesia.
