 MARRIOTT CHOOSES IBM RISC SYSTEM/6000
 FOR WORLDWIDE PROPERTY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM announced today that Marriott Hotels, Resorts & Suites has chosen a new worldwide property management system using IBM RISC System/6000(A) servers to provide support to more than 230 of its full service hotels.
RISC System/6000 POWERservers(A) using IBM's AIX/6000(A) 3.2 operating system will be the backbone of Marriott's Next Generation System (NGS) for hotel management, a single architecture that will handle the day-to-day operations of a Marriott hotel including: check- in/check-out, back office accounting, sales, catering, food and beverage, and human resources.
IBM will also provide value added products and services to each hotel through every phase of installation. This will include cabling each hotel and installing an uninterruptable power supply, terminals, printers and fax capability, and customizing each RISC System/6000 model with resident software and Marriott's application code before it is shipped from IBM's Austin, Texas, plant.
IBM's ability to provide data conversion from existing systems and two years of project management and consulting were also integral to Marriott's decision to choose the RISC System/6000. "A systems integration project of this size has never been done before in the hotel industry", said Steve Hanna, vice president of Hotel Systems for Marriott. "It was important that we work with someone who would look at this as a partnership. The project management and consulting services that IBM offers, and IBM's ability to handle the data conversion from our different systems will be key to our success."
Ken Thornton, vice president and general manager, IBM Mid-Atlantic Area, said, "This is a major systems integration win for IBM, underscoring the value that our customers see in IBM's products, services and consulting offerings. We are very proud of our partnership with Marriott."
Marriott, the world's leading operator of hotel rooms, expects to begin a pilot program in the Washington, D.C., area in December of this year.
