MARRIAGE COUNCIL ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR COMPREHENSIVE NEW TREATMENT CENTER
PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Marriage Council of Philadelphia, the oldest counseling organization of its kind in the nation, announced plans today for the creation of a comprehensive new center for clinical treatment, professional education and research in relationship issues.
Establishment of the new center is being made possible by a $3 million grant from the Alter Foundation, presented today at a special ceremony held at the Four Seasons in Philadelphia.
Headquartered in Philadelphia, with satellite offices in five suburban locations, Marriage Council is an important community resource where people can seek help for all types of relationship issues -- from intimacy and communication problems to the impact of stress on the family. Payment for services is on a sliding scale, based upon ability to pay, and no one is turned away.
Commenting on the grant, Martin Goldberg, M.D., director of Marriage Council, stated, "We are overwhelmed and delighted by the generosity of the Alter Foundation and by the continuous involvement and support of its chairman and Advanta Corp. Chairman Dennis Alter. We hope this gift will encourage other individuals and corporations to help Marriage Council build a strong foundation for the future and expand the scope of our services in the years to come."
Marriage Council was selected by the Alter Foundation because, stated Alter, "We recognize that there are many important problems and needs in our society, however, one that is fundamental for everyone is the basic need for healthy relationships -- with family members, spouses, friends and co-workers. Relationships are key to our time on earth and are, in fact, at the core of our existence. If we help to strengthen one couple, that will strengthen one family, one community and so on. The pyramiding effect of strong healthy relationships is profound."
According to Goldberg, Marriage Council is looking for a new headquarters site in the West Philadelphia area. As the Division of Family Study of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine, Marriage Council works with thousands of Delaware Valley couples, families and individuals each year.
Marriage Council also serves as a resource for mental health professionals, offering training and continuing education in the areas of couple, family and sex therapy. In addition, Marriage Council is a center for research in these fields.
Advanta Corp. (NASDAQ: ADVN) is a financial services holding company with serviced assets of more than $3 billion and 2 million customers nationwide. Advanta operates through its subsidiaries to market credit cards, home equity loans, equipment leases and deposit products to consumers nationwide.
