MARR GUITAR SUPERSTAR.

To men of a certain age he's the greatest guitarist who ever picked a six-string but you won't catch Johnny Marr on one knee, licking his fretboard like so many of the other so-called greats... unless it's absolutely necessary for the song. The former Smiths axeman keeps a steady economy with his riffage. Yes, his fretwork is complicated but it's never showy - every note has a purpose, it's lean and means something. That's what made his partnership with Morrissey so special. Every vocal twirl is grounded with Marr's guitar, at once rhythmic and shimmering, but listen to it out of context and it's just as flamboyant.

He's come a long way since The Smiths, though, ploughing his furrow as indie's gun for hire and finally achieving deserved recognition as a solo star. He's just released Adrenaline Baby, a live effort recorded during the tour for last year's fine Playland album. But we all know there's no substitute for the real deal - and Johnny Marr IS the real deal. Catch him at Limelight 1 tonight, doors 8pm, tickets PS18.50 plus booking fee...
