MARKETING/NEW BUSINESS UNIT ESTABLISHED BY ZAPATA CORP.
HOUSTON, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Zapata Corporation (NYSE: ZOS) announced today that it has established Zapata Protein, Inc. as its primary marketing and business development subsidiary for Zapata's marine protein and related activities, Zapata Chairman and Chief Executive Officer R.C. Lassiter said today. "Zapata Protein will be charged with aggressively developing new markets for our traditional fish meal and fish oil products while ensuring that our established customers continue to receive the quality service they have come to rely on," Lassiter said. "We intend to improve the performance of Zapata's marine protein business through the development and marketing of new value-added products from menhaden and through new business ventures related to our marine protein operations. Zapata Protein will provide the flexibility to more aggressively pursue these opportunities," he said. Lassiter announced the appointment of two senior officers of Zapata Protein: James D. Barfoot who will serve as senior vice president- marketing and Joseph D. Oliver who will serve as senior vice president- finance. As senior vice president-marketing, Barfoot will be responsible for development of both new products and new markets for Zapata's traditional menhaden fish meal and fish oil products. Barfoot previously served as vice president-business development of Zapata's marine protein production division, Zapata Haynie Corporation. A graduate of the University of Richmond (Va.) with B.A. and M.Ed. degrees, he joined Zapata Haynie in 1979. Barfoot will be based at Zapata Haynie division headquarters in Hammond, La. As senior vice president-finance, Oliver's responsibilities will focus on business development, planning, finance and operational oversight. Previously, Oliver served as director of coordination and planning and as treasurer of Zapata Corporation. A graduate of the University of Mississippi with a B.A. in Accountancy and a Certified Public Accountant, Oliver joined Zapata Corporation in 1989. He will be based at Zapata corporate headquarters in Houston. Lassiter also announced these personnel changes at Zapata Haynie: Edward W. Swindell has been named Executive Vice President with responsibility for operation of the company's menhaden processing plants and fishing fleet.Steve Benton has been appointed director-marine support services with responsibility for maintenance of the company's fishing vessels and fish spotter aircraft. Dalton Berry has been named director-quality control and technical services, with responsibility for quality control of Zapata's menhaden products and technical support for plant operations. Zapata Corporation is the nation's leading producer of marine protein products from menhaden, including fish meal, a high protein additive in livestock feed, and edible fish oil. The company operates a fleet of fishing vessels that supply five processing plants in Louisiana, Mississippi and Virginia. Zapata also produces natural gas and oil and is involved in other businesses related to natural gas and natural gas liquids.
