 RICHMOND, Va., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- MARKEL CORPORATION


(NASDAQ: MAKL) announced today that Joseph J. Prochaska, Jr., Executive Vice President-Operations had resigned and will be leaving the Company in the fall of 1992. Prochaska also served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Company's subsidiary, Shand Morahan & Company, Inc. Prochaska expressed his thanks to all those he had worked with over the course of his 17 years with Shand and also expressed appreciation for the Company's support of him in reaching his decision.
 Anthony F. Markel, President and Chief Operating Officer of Markel Corporation, will assume the additional responsibilities of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Shand Morahan & Company, Inc.
 Markel Corporation markets and underwrites specialty insurance products and programs to a variety of niche markets. In each of these markets, the Company seeks to provide quality products and excellent customer service so that it can be a market leader. The financial goals of the Company are to earn consistent underwriting profits and superior investment returns to build shareholder value.
