MARITRANS OPERATING PARTNERS L.P. VOTED TO HONOR ROLL BY NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION; GALA RECEPTION TO BE HELD IN D.C.
PHILADELPHIA, May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Environmental Development Association (NEDA) has voted Maritrans Operating Partners L.P. to the NEDA Honor Roll 1992, it was announced recently.
Maritrans was selected by a panel of judges for its efforts in the area of oil spill prevention under its Partners In Excellence program. Nine other companies including Xerox Corp., Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., Monsanto and AT&T were also named to the Honor Roll for their aggressive initiatives on behalf of the environment.
Headquartered in Philadelphia, Maritrans Operating Partners is the nation's leading U.S. flag marine transporter of petroleum products engaged in the coastwise trade. The goal of Maritrans' Partners In Excellence initiative is zero oil spills. The initiative includes components of employee involvement, shared values, total quality management and performance reward systems. In 1991, Maritrans employees delivered 99.99999 percent of their petroleum cargoes safely.
Maritrans Chief Executive Officer Stephen A. Van Dyck commented, "We are all extremely proud of our employees' accomplishments in preventing oil spills. The NEDA award is important because it validates our business strategy of environmental protection and pollution prevention. We believe this is the only strategy that makes sense, despite its added cost and our current difficult market conditions."
Founded in 1973, NEDA, a coalition of industry, labor and agriculture, has been an active participant in the environmental policy debate in Washington. Their continuing mission is to seek and find solutions to environmental problems that are not only effective but also economically feasible. Each year, the foundation honors those individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the continuing need for better public understanding and enlightened decisions affecting the environment and the economy.
Maritrans Operating Partners L.P. will be honored at a gala program to be held in Washington, D.C., on June 24. In its announcement, NEDA indicated that leaders from business, industry and government, and representatives from leading environmental organizations will be attending. In addition, NEDA has invited leading members of the administration and participants in the United Nations Earth Summit so that they can be familiar with the excellent work being done by Honor Roll honorees.
