MARION MERRELL DOW POLLEN HOTLINE AVAILABLE NATIONWIDE

KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Allergy sufferers in and around 50 cities across the United States can now obtain their local pollen forecast by calling the Marion Merrell Dow Pollen Forecast Hotline (1-800-POLLENS). The forecast takes traditional pollen counts one step further by actually predicting pollen levels for the coming week, and will provide a significant advantage for the more than 40 million Americans who suffer from allergies. The hotline is sponsored by Marion Merrell Dow Inc., makers of the terfenadine (Seldane(R)) family of anti-allergy products.
"The Marion Merrell Dow Pollen Forecast Hotline is valuable because it provides allergy sufferers with a look at the week ahead, rather than giving the pollen count for a given day," said Edward Philpot, M.D., assistant clinical professor of medicine in the department of rheumatology, allergy and immunology at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine. "The hotline will be extremely helpful for allergy sufferers in determining what treatment they will need for the upcoming week."
The forecasts describe pollen levels as high, medium or low. However, the information that callers receive will vary depending on the city where they live and the time of year. Pollen culprits are different in the various regions of the country, but for the most part tree pollens are the main allergens of spring, although grass and weed pollen are prevalent in the summer and fall. The winter months are generally slow months for pollen activity in most of the country, but in warmer regions these pollens may be present year-round.
The Marion Merrell Dow Pollen Forecast is devised by Multidata Inc., St. Paul, Minn., and is determined by a scientific, statistical model that incorporates a number of important elements. First, the model considers historical pollen and meteorological data. Secondly, pollen and meteorological data from the week preceding the forecast are reviewed and finally, the projected meteorological data for the week of the forecast are taken into account. All of this information is tabulated using the statistical model, and the predictions are made.
The forecast is updated every Wednesday at 5 p.m. Central Standard Time.
Traditionally, allergy sufferers will reach for an over-the-counter (OTC) allergy medication as a first attempt at controlling allery symptoms. However, many OTC allergy medications cause impairing side effects and allergy sufferers may want to see a physician for nonimpairing alternatives.
Seldane (terfenadine), the first of the "new generation" of antihistamines, does not cause unwanted central nervous system side effects such as sedation, lack of concentration, diminished performance, impaired physical and mental judgment, and inattentiveness.
Seldane (terfenadine) and Seldane-D(R) (terfenadine 60 mg and pseudoephedrine HCl 120 mg) are contraindicated in patients taking ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox) or erythromycin (an antibiotic) and in patients with significant hepatic (liver) dysfunction. Recommended doses of terfenadine must not be exceeded.
