 MARION MERRELL DOW'S LYONS ON DOW'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS
 MIDLAND, Mich., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Fred W. Lyons Jr.,


president of Marion Merrell Dow Inc. (NYSE: MKC), today was elected to the Board of Directors of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW).
 Marion Merrell Dow Inc. was formed in December 1989 through the combination of Marion Laboratories, Inc., and Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals Inc. Headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., the company manufactures and markets prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals in North America, Europe and the Pacific Basin. It has more than 9,000 associates worldwide and sales of approximately $2.4 billion.
 In commenting on Lyons' appointment, Frank Popoff, president and CEO of The Dow Chemical Company, said, "Fred Lyons brings outstanding executive skills and business insight to the Dow Board. His experience in the area of health care will also serve us well."
 Prior to joining Marion, Lyons was with Alcon Laboratories, Inc., for 11 years, where he last served as vice president-general manager and as a director of Conal Pharmaceuticals, Inc., an Alcon subsidiary.
 A graduate of the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, Lyons received a master of business administration degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration in 1959. In 1989, he was awarded an Honorary Degree of Humane Letters by Long Island University.
 Lyons is chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. He is also on the Board of Directors of Project HOPE and the Civil Council of Greater Kansas City, and is on the Board of Directors and Board of Trustees of the Midwest Research Institute. He serves on the Advisory Committee of the Mid-America Heart Institute and was a founding member of the Advanced Coronary Treatment Foundation and serves as a director of the American Royal Association.
 Lyons also is on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, is chairman of its Pharmacy Liaison Committee, and has served as chairman and as treasurer of its Finance Committee.
