MARINEAU NAMED PRESIDENT & CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER; THOMASON PROMOTED TO SENIOR VP-INTERNATIONAL

 CHICAGO, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Quaker Oats Company (NYSE: OAT) announced today the promotions of two senior executives. Philip A. Marineau, executive vice president and chief operating officer, has been named president and chief operating officer, and Robert S. Thomason, president-Europe, has been promoted to senior vice president- international grocery products, reporting to Marineau. Both men were elected to their new positions by Quaker's Board of Directors at a meeting yesterday.
 William D. Smithburg, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Phil Marineau has developed an outstanding record of success in leading both our domestic and international businesses. At the same time, he has been instrumental in leading the process of cultural change within Quaker through several important initiatives. His unique combination of operating skills and business vision make him the clear choice for this critical assignment."
 Marineau, 46, joined Quaker in 1972 after receiving a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University and an MBA from Northwestern University. After rising rapidly through the organization, he was appointed vice president-product management, Foods Division, in 1984. Subsequently, he held the positions of president-grocery specialties/market development, executive vice president-international grocery products, executive vice president-U.S. grocery products, and executive vice president-North and South American grocery products. He was named to his most recent position as executive vice president and chief operating officer in July 1992. In 1990, he was elected to Quaker's board of directors.
 In his new position, Thomason, 48, will oversee Quaker's food and pet food businesses in Europe, Latin America and the Pacific. Raised and educated in England, he joined Quaker in 1971 and held various financial and corporate planning positions at the company's Chicago headquarters prior to being named vice president-corporate planning and analysis in 1979. Subsequently, he held the positions of vice president-business development and planning, South and Central America; vice president-business development and planning, Europe; managing director-Quaker Oats Limited, United Kingdom; vice president-pet foods and chairman-Quaker-U.K.; and president-pet foods, Europe. He was named to his most recent position of president-Europe in May 1992.
 Quaker is an international marketer of foods, pet foods and beverages.
