MARINA V. N. WHITMAN ELECTED A DIRECTOR OF ALCOA

 PITTSBURGH, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Marina v. N. Whitman today was elected a director of Alcoa (NYSE: AA) and will be nominated to be elected to a two-year term at the company's annual meeting of shareholders May 6.
 Dr. Whitman, 58 years old, is Distinguished Visiting Professor of Business Administration and Public Policy at the University of Michigan. From 1979 to 1992 she was an officer of General Motors Corporation, first as vice president and chief economist, and later as vice president and group executive for public affairs, which included economics, environmental activities, industry-government relations and public relations.
 Before joining General Motors, Dr. Whitman was a member of the faculty of the Department of Economics at the University of Pittsburgh, beginning as an instructor in 1962 and becoming Distinguished Public Service Professor of Economics in 1973. She was a member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers in 1972-1973, while on leave from the university.
 Dr. Whitman received a B.A. degree in government from Radcliffe College and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Columbia University. She is a director of Browning-Ferris Industries, Chemical Banking Corporation, Procter & Gamble and UNOCAL. She also serves or served as a trustee, director or member of numerous educational, professional and governmental organizations, including Harvard and Princeton universities.
