CHARITY campaigner Marina Dalglish today pledged support towards a pounds 1.3m project to improve cancer treatment in her home town.

Through her appeal, pounds 500,000 has been donated towards expanding the treatment unit at Southport hospital.

The funding, matched by West Lancashire Community Hospice Association, means renovation work will begin early next year.

The expansion of the centre, where some patients need up to eight hours of chemotherapy at a time, will see new consulting rooms built and a more comfortable waiting area.

Marina, who lives in Birkdale with husband Kenny, launched the Marina Dalglish Appeal in 2003 after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Marina said: "We are absolutely delighted to be involved in this project."
