MARCH OF DIMES AND HEALTHTEX OFFERING FREE IMMUNIZATION CHART FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN, NEWBORN-AGE 12

NEW YORK, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- As President Clinton focuses the nation on the importance of childhood immunizations, the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation and Healthtex, Inc., a national manufacturer of children's apparel, are leading efforts to build public awareness of when children are to be immunized. In a special partnership, they have come out with a free, easy-to-use, pocket-sized pull-chart showing the schedule of recommended shots to protect children, newborn through age 12, against dangerous illnesses including measles, mumps, rubella, meningitis and polio.
At present, over 1 million immunization charts have been distributed to parents and child caregivers, as well as members of the health-care community and government agencies. Healthtex is committed to continue production of updated charts; total distribution will exceed 2.5 million charts in 1993. Moreover, the company is developing a new bi-lingual version for dissemination in Spanish-speaking communities.
Current government reports reveal that fewer than 60 percent of all preschool children, in some areas as few as 10 percent, are receiving timely immunizations.
"The most important thing that child caregivers can do for their baby's health is to make sure that he or she gets immunized on time," said Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes. "Our partnership with Healthtex is a great example of what corporations can do to help improve the health of America's babies and young children."
"The low level of immunizations in the United States is a genuine problem," said Ellen Rohde, president of Healthtex, a division of VF Corporation. "Healthtex is tremendously committed to helping children get a healthy start in life. We are pleased that our immunization chart can reduce parents' anxiety about immunizations by making them as knowledgeable as possible."
A free single copy of the Healthtex/March of Dimes Immunization Chart is available by sending a self-addressed, stamped, business-size envelope to: SHOTS, March of Dimes, 1275 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, N.Y. 10605.
