MARCH OF DIMES AND HEALTHTEX OFFER FREE IMMUNIZATION CHARTS TO BOOST PARENTS' AWARENESS

NEW YORK, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- While the Clinton administration is being proactive in considering a plan to provide free vaccines for children, the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation and Healthtex, Inc., a leading children's apparel manufacturer, have formed a partnership to distribute a free pocket-sized pull chart showing the schedule of recommended shots.
Since January, 1992, this easy-to-use Healthtex/March of Dimes Immunization Chart has been keeping the public informed about when children, newborn through age 12, are to be immunized for protection against such dangerous illnesses as measles, mumps, rubella, meningitis, pneumonia and hepatitis. Over one million charts have already been distributed to parents, as well as child care and health providers, and total distribution is expected to reach 2.5 million by the end of 1993.
Current government reports reveal that less than 60 percent of all preschool children, in some areas fewer than 10 percent, are receiving timely immunizations.
"The most important thing that child caregivers can do for their baby's health is to make sure that he or she gets immunized on time," said Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes. "Many parents believe that infectious childhood diseases are a thing of the past, but this is not true. These diseases are still with us. And these illnesses can have very serious complications, including brain damage -- they can even be fatal."
"Healthtex, a division of VF Corporation, wants to do all it can to help children get a healthy start in life," said Ellen Rohde, president. "The low level of immunizations being administered in this county is now a very serious situation. We will continue to do our part to educate parents and encourage them to be aware of recommended immunization schedules."
A free single copy of the Healthtex/March of Dimes Immunization Chart is available by sending a self-addressed, stamped, business-size envelope to:
 SHOTS, March of Dimes
 1275 Mamaroneck Avenue
 White Plains, N.Y. 10605
