MARCH OF DIMES: DISTINCTION IN MEDIA EXCELLENCE AWARDS SLATED FOR OCTOBER

 CLEVELAND, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Distinction in Media Excellence (D.I.M.E.) Awards will be held on Oct. 13 at "Windows on the River" at the Power House in the Flats here. More than 200 media and communications professionals are expected to attend the inaugural event. The guest speaker will be Dr. Bernadine Healy, former director of the National Institutes of Health. Healy launched the Women's Health Initiative, a $625 million effort to study the causes, prevention and cures of diseases that affect women.
 Among the presenters of the awards will be David Eden, partner, William Silverman and Company; Merle Pollis, WHK-AM radio personality; Gale Larson, vice president of University McDonald Women's Hospital; State Representative Jane Campbell; and Kathy Kline, president of MetroHealth Systems. Connie Dieken, WKYC-TV news anchor, will serve as mistress of ceremonies.
 The D.I.M.E. Awards signify the strong ability of the media to carry the message and enhance the education about healthy babies in the community. These awards are conducted annually by the Northern Ohio Chapter of the March of Dimes. Entries focus on issues concerning infant, child or maternal health care. Judging of these entries took place in Chicago on Sept. 15 by a judging group of media and communications professionals.
 The events of the evening are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. with a welcoming reception, with dinner commencing at 6:45 p.m., and concluding with the awards ceremony at 7:45 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person. For more information call 216-642-0400 or 800-686-2323.
 The March of Dimes is a national volunteer agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Through the Campaign for Healthier Babies, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, advocacy and education.
