MARATHON REALTY CO.: NEW FEDERAL COURTHOUSE PROPOSAL WOULD SAVE TAXPAYERS $75 MILLION

SEATTLE, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Marathon Realty Co. at a public meeting today will outline a proposal that would save taxpayers $75 million by building a new federal courthouse on a vacant lot in downtown Seattle, instead of over interstate 5 as currently proposed.
"Marathon can meet the needs of courthouse tenants, save the taxpayers $75 million and result in less traffic congestion both downtown and on the freeway," Marathon Assistant Vice President John M. Sullivan said.
"All we are asking is that our proposal be considered as an alternative to the over-the-freeway proposal. We welcome an independent analysis," Sullivan said.
Marathon representatives will outline their proposal at a public hearing that begins at 5:30 p.m. today in rooms 402 and 403 of the Washington State Convention and Trade Center. Marathon's site is at Second and University, across from the Seattle Art Museum.
Because the over-the-freeway site proposed by the federal General Services Administration will essentially be built on air, it will require the construction of two buildings instead of one. In addition to the costs of duplication, each of those buildings will require extremely expensive structural supports to protect them from earthquakes and terrorist attacks.
They would also add to congestion downtown and on I-5 during and after the construction, Sullivan said.
