MAPS NOW DOCUMENT NEW WORLD ORDER
SKOKIE, Ill., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The first world maps to depict

all 15 former Soviet republics as independent countries have just been released by Rand McNally.
"Making revisions that reflect world change isn't something new at Rand McNally, we update our map bases continually," said World Atlas Vice President Russell Voisin. "Though certainly the magnitude and speed of the recent changes in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe are the most significant since World War II."
The Rand McNally Cosmopolitan World Map ($3.50), International World Map ($3.50) and Political World Map ($6.95) are the first to show Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus (formerly Byelorussia), Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan (formerly Kirghizia), Moldova (formerly Moldavia), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan as independent countries.
In addition to recognizing the new political status of these countries, the maps have also been revised to reflect city name changes. These range from the much-publicized renaming of Leningrad to St. Petersburg to such lesser-known name changes as Frunze, Kyrgystan, to Bishkek. City name changes, however, are not limited to those in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. For example, the capital city of Bogota, Colombia, has been renamed Santa Fe de Bogota.
Each of the three wall maps are different in style and content. The Political World Map, for example, features the Robinson Projection which transforms the spherical shape of the earth into a flat map with minimal distortion. Individual countries are presented in contrasting colors, and three-dimensial shading depicts physical characteristics of the Earth's surface. In addition to the new political boundaries and city name changes, the Political Portrait map has 15 new country flags among the more than 190 flags featured on the map's border.
The Cosmopolitan World Map shows countries in different colors, major shipping routes, world time zones and distances between major ports. And the International World Map emphasizes the Earth's physical features in shaded relief, while political boundaries are depicted with bands of color.
All three Rand McNally world maps, each measuring 52 inches by 34 inches, are available at book and map stores throughout the United States and Canada.
