MAPLE LEAF FOODS INC. CEO RESIGNS

 TORONTO, June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Maple Leaf Foods Inc. (TSE: MLF) today announced that Charles Bowen has resigned as chief executive of the company effective immediately. Bowen, who has also resigned as a director of Hillsdown Holdings plc, the 56 percent majority shareholder of Maple Leaf Foods, has accepted the position of chief executive of Booker plc, a large U.K.-based international food and agricultural company.
 The board also announced that Brent Ballantyne, a Maple Leaf Foods director and group president of its Agribusiness operations has been appointed chief operating officer. He will report to David Newton, deputy chairman of the board who will assume the position of president.
 Sir John Nott, chairman of the board, said that "While we are naturally sorry to see Charles leave, we fully understand his wish to be chief executive of a major U.K. public company."
 "Brent Ballantyne has been a senior executive with the company since Hillsdown's purchase of Maple Leaf Mills in 1987. Prior to that he held executive management positions both in Canada and the U.S. The board is fully confident in his ability to lead the company in its strategy to become a major North American food company."
 Maple Leaf Foods is Canada's largest food processing company with operations across Canada, in the United States and Europe. The company's products include fresh and prepared meats, poultry, flours, bakery mixes, fresh and frozen bakery products, seafood and animal feeds. Its products are sold to retail, food service, wholesale, agricultural and industrial customers worldwide.
