MANY BUSINESSES DON'T SURVIVE HURRICANES; CHUBB OFFERS TIPS FOR MINIMIZING LOSSES

WARREN, N.J., July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Hurricane season is here -- and businesses that aren't ready for it are risking their futures, says Chubb Group of Insurance Companies.
Many businesses don't survive the financial setback a major disaster can cause. To help companies minimize their potential for damage from hurricanes, Chubb is offering a brochure that outlines steps to take before a major storm strikes.
 Among the suggestions:
-- Shut down the power supply to all equipment.
-- Move vulnerable equipment, materials and products away from doors, windows and skylights. Cover and secure with tarps or plastic.
-- Move data processing equipment off the floor.
-- Back up all computer files and store in a water-tight container offsite.
-- Secure valuable papers in water-tight containers in a secure area of the building.
-- Maintain emergency, cleanup and food supplies for your disaster team.
-- Inspect roofs periodically. Repair any design and installation defects.
-- Inspect the roof perimeter flashing; make sure it's adequately fastened.
-- Check skylights and repair if necessary.
 -- Reinforce overhead doors.
-- Cover or disconnect all ventilation systems on the walls or roof to prevent water from coming into contact with the system.
-- Securely anchor mechanical equipment to the roof system.
-- Protect all glass windows using plywood coverings, or buy custom window and door shutter systems. Make sure all coverings or shutters are adequately fastened and designed to resist code-specified wind loading.
Chubb also advises that businesses develop disaster preparedness and recovery plans. Specific procedures and responsibilities and phone numbers of key vendors and customers should be included.
