MANUFACTURER WARNS AGAINST SNIFFING AEROSOL DUSTERS;
MISUSE OF PRODUCTS REPORTED IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
SOMERVILLE, N.J., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Following is a statement by Philip M. Lapin, chief executive officer of Falcon Safety Products, Inc., about reported "sniffing" incidents involving Southern California youths and two of its products -- Dust-Off XL and Century Duster. Statement follows:
"We have received reports that teens in Torrance, Redondo Beach, sections of Los Angeles and possibly other areas have been misusing various brands of aerosol dusters by sniffing them. Two of our products are sold in the area and therefore might have been misused this way -- Dust-Off XL and Century Duster.
"We want to warn the young people of Southern California, their parents and their teachers that this practice is seriously harmful to their health and can be fatal. These products are entirely safe when used properly. When they are purposely inhaled in concentrated form, however, the concentrations required for any alteration of consciousness is greater than the concentration that can cause heart arrhythmia, a potentially fatal, irregular heartbeat. Suffocation, frostbite and other harmful results may occur.
"Each of our products bears this warning on its label: 'Intentional Misuse by Deliberately Concentrating and/or Inhaling Contents May be Fatal.' These warnings should be taken seriously.
"Our dusters are used widely to clean and maintain sensitive equipment, especially machines and materials related to photography, computers and office operations. The user activates the cannister by squeezing a trigger and propelling dry, cleaning gas through a nozzle. The force of the blasts removes dust, lint and dirt from delicate surfaces without leaving residue or adding moisture.
"We will send a copy of our warning about sniffing to all Los Angeles high schools.
"We will send brochures and a videotape warning about the hazards of inhaling aerosol products to any Los Angeles high schools which request it -- at no cost. These materials were prepared by the Chemical Specialties Manufacturers Association. High school administrators should send their requests on school letterhead by telefax to 908-707-8855. If they prefer, they may write Falcon Safety Products, Inc., 25 Chubb Way, P.O. Box 1299, Somerville, NJ 09876-1299.
"We have asked Southern California retailers to use reasonable discretion in selling our products to teens.
"Our company has sold more than 15 million cannisters of Dust-Off and thousands of cannisters of the newer Century Duster over the past 20 years, establishing an exemplary record of safety. We want to maintain this record. For this reason, we say to all those who might misuse our product or any other aerosol product: 'Don't risk your life. Don't risk your health. Don't risk damage to your internal organs. If you have to sniff, sniff air."
