MANTRACK REVEALS RESULTS OF TELEPHONE READER SURVEY IN THE AUGUST ISSUE OF PLAYBOY MAGAZINE

Women in Combat, Gun Control, Abortion Rights Attitudes Evaluated
CHICAGO, July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The results of a telephone survey of Playboy readers conducted on the Mantrack Survey Line are reported in the magazine's August issue (on sale Tuesday, July 6).
On the subject of women in combat, 60 percent of respondents felt females were fully qualified. Of the 40 percent who disagreed, most feared that women would be an unnecessary complication on the battlefield, while others thought that women weren't physically strong enough for battle. Sixty-seven percent of respondents felt that women should be required to register for the draft.
Legal abortion under all circumstances was approved by 75 percent of the Mantrack respondents, while only four percent favored making all abortions illegal. The remainder felt abortion's legality should be determined by special circumstances.
Playboy readers were ambivalent on the subject of gun control. Only three percent of respondents favored the banning of all guns, and 17 percent stringent controls. The percentages for some control and no control at all were nearly equal, at 43 percent and 37 percent, respectively.
The Mantrack Survey Line regularly invites readers to call Playboy and express their opinions on a wide range of topics. In the August issue, the topics are: Would you date a feminist? Who is your favorite TV newsman or -woman? And, are you faithful (and what happens when you're not)? Callers to the line (1-900-896-8722) must be at least 18 years old; calls cost 75 cents per minute, with the average length of call about three minutes.
Also in Mantrack for August are observations on the trend among popular rock groups to advocate marijuana use; an excerpt from the controversial book "Women Who Run with the Wolves;" a report on new scientific evidence that shows homosexuality is largely genetically determined and a Guest Opinion column by monologist Eric Bogosian on some reasons why men and women often don't seem to want the same things from life, and what both sexes can do about it.
Mantrack, edited by Stephen Randall, is a regular feature of Playboy magazine and part of a continuing opinion survey by Playboy and the prestigious Roper Organization. It features timely capsule observations and comments on issues of interest to men as well as guest essays by a wide range of newsmakers and contemporary thinkers.
