MANNESMANN DEMAG CORPORATION COMMISSIONS LADLE METALLURGY
AND CONTINUOUS CASTING FACILITY AT WCI STEEL
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- On Jan. 20, 1992, WCI Steel in Warren, Ohio, began commercial operation of its recently commissioned twin strand slab casting machine, it was announced today.
The complete continuous casting facility provided on a turnkey basis by Mannesmann Demag Corporation of Pittsburgh, in conjunction with Mannesmann Demag Huettentechnik of Duisburg, Germany, includes a ladle metallurgical furnace, vacuum degassing facility, twin strand casting machine and associated equipment including a water treatment plant.
The ladle furnace and vacuum degassing facility was commissioned in May 1991. The curved mold casting machine will produce slabs 8-10 inches thick and 24-63 inches wide from 190 ton heats. Design casting speed for 9 inch thick slabs is 56 inches per minute. The design capacity of the complex is approximately 1,500,000 tons per year, but is capable of 2,000,000 tons per year with certain product mixes.
The new facility, which already cast a sequence of five heats on the fourth day of operation, is capable of producing unlimited grades of carbon, high carbon, alloy and high strength steel, including some grades that are not presently being cast in the United States. While significantly broadening WCI Steel's product potential, the new complex is expected to improve productivity by increasing production yields and reducing energy and slab processing costs.
Mannesmann Demag Corporation assumed direct turnkey responsibility for the site operations, including scheduling, site coordination and construction management in order to ensure delivery of the complete project to WCI Steel.
