MANNESMANN AND OLIVETTI IN EUROPEAN TELECOM VENTURE.
Mannesmann AG, of Germany, said it planned to form a joint venture with Italy's Olivetti to meet rising demand for cross-border telecommunications services in Europe. The venture, to be called Mannesmann Euro. map, will use phone lines and mobile networks owned by the two firms and others operated by French and Austrian phone companies partly owned by Mannesmann. Mannesmann Mobilfunk GmbH operates Germany's largest mobile phone group, while Mannesmann Arcor AG is considered the leading challenger to Deutsche Telekom AG, the former monopoly telephone company. In Italy, Mannesmann and Olivetti are the main shareholders in Omnitel, Italy's second largest mobile phone group. They also operate Infostrada, a joint venture in fixed network services. Mannesmann also owns 15% of Cegetel in France and 75% of Austria's Telering. Mannesmann Euro. map could draw on the networks of these companies to provide seamless corporate, wireless and Internet services.
