MANHATTAN'S TALLEST HOTEL, THE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL NEW YORK MAKES ITS DEBUT

NEW YORK, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Isadore Sharp, chairman and president of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, today announced the opening of the new Four Seasons Hotel New York at 57 East 57th St. between Park and Madison Avenues.
"The only hotel in the Western Hemisphere designed by world-renowned architect I.M. Pei, the Four Seasons Hotel New York is an exciting addition to our portfolio," commented Sharp. "Setting it apart from competitors are such outstanding physical features as the city's largest guest rooms combined with the high caliber of service for which Four Seasons properties are renowned. It is a perfect complement to our other New York City hotel -- The Pierre."
Designed by I.M. Pei of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners and associated architect Frank Williams of Frank Williams & Associates, the 52-floor, 367-room hotel is the city's tallest at 682 feet. It is located between Park and Madison Avenues at 57 East 57th Street.
The hotel is clad in the same Magny limestone that Pei selected for the Louvre expansion. Its four-story base rises in a series of setbacks marked by terraces and 12-foot lanterns.
"Architecturally, we designed the Four Seasons Hotel to continue the grand tradition of a time when going to a hotel was an occasion," said Pei. "Its emphasis is on celebrating the luxury hotel experience, with interiors designed around personal service and discreet ceremony."
Managed by Toronto-based Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, the world's largest operator of luxury properties, the hotel is designed to become a center of city life. "We expect the Four Seasons Hotel New York to achieve the same stature as the great New York hotels of the 1920's and 30's," continued Sharp.
Standard guest rooms are the city's largest, averaging 600 square feet. A 3,000-square-foot Presidential Suite occupies the entire top floor.
In keeping with the hotel's modernist style, interior designers Don Siembieda and Jay Leff of Chhada, Siembieda & Partners, decorated each guest room in caramel or copper colors with custom-designed English sycamore furniture and built-in cabinetry. Each soundproof room features a foyer, separate dressing room, and a living/sleeping area with cable television, radio, complimentary video, bedside switches that operate window blinds, and two-line telephones with speaker and computer modem. Spacious marble bathrooms are outfitted with tubs that fill in one minute, color television, radio and telephone.
The 12 meeting rooms, accommodating 10 to 150 persons, feature state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment. Five offer their own business work stations.
Other facilities include a full-service Business Center and a 5,000- square-foot Fitness Center and Spa.
Dining options include "Fifty Seven Fifty Seven," a contemporary American grill; the adjoining Bar; and the Lobby Lounge, a terraced conversation/dining area.
Four Season Hotel New York is owned by Hotel Investment Corporation. The hotel assemblage was handled by the Zeckendorf Company. Tishman Construction Corporation, New York, is the construction manager.
Room rate range from $295 per night for a standard room to $3,000 for the Presidential Suite.
In August 1992, Four Season acquired 100 percent ownership of Regent International Hotels, including its management contract, trade names and trademarks. This transaction now makes Four Seasons Hotels and resorts together with Regent the world's largest operator of luxury hotels. Upon completion of properties currently under development, Four Season and Regent will have 45 hotels in 19 countries, Four Seasons currently owns and/or operates 26 Four Seasons properties and 11 Regent hotels. Under development are two Four Seasons resorts, five urban hotels, and one Regent hotel.
