MANASSAS CONTROL TOWER TRAVELED 1,700 MILES FOR DEDICATION
WASHINGTON, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The airport at Manassas, Va., has a new control tower which was dedicated today after traveling 1,700 miles.
It was a trip that started in Colorado 18 months ago. James B. Busey, deputy secretary of transportation and former administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and Daniel J. Peterson, head of the FAA's Eastern Region, told Virginia aviation officials that if they would provide a tower for the state's busiest general aviation airport, the FAA would equip and staff it.
The alternative was to wait five or more years while the government went through its normal funding and construction process.
At the dedication ceremony today, Busey said: "I was pleased to be part of this unique aviation success story. Working together, the FAA and local and state governments made ideal partners in this unusual effort."
The 60-foot tower, built at the Arapaho County Airport in Englewood, Colo., in the 1970s, was no longer being used. Its existence, and its availability, came to the attention of Virginia and local officials who agreed to share the $970,738 tab for buying the tower, disassembling it, trucking it to Manassas, and reassembling it.
Relocating such a tower had never been done before. The FAA, working through its eastern region office in Jamaica, N.Y., kept its part of the agreement, equipping and staffing the tower.
So now the Manassas airport, which is home base for 424 aircraft and which logged 144,800 takeoffs or landings in 1991, enjoys the benefit of an air traffic control tower with the controllers providing safe separation between aircraft in the air and on the ground.
