MANAGEMENT CHANGES ANNOUNCED FOR ARCO'S OPERATIONS

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Executive Vice President William E. Wade Jr. has assumed management responsibility for all of ARCO's upstream oil and gas operations, including ARCO Alaska Inc., it was announced by ARCO President and Chief Operating Officer Mike R. Bowlin.
"We feel that a single focus for our upstream oil and gas activities will create distinct advantages," said Bowlin. "This structure will enable us to more effectively allocate our key resources, people, and capital across our exploration and production businesses."
Wade had previously been responsible for all of ARCO's oil and gas exploration and production operations outside of Alaska.
Executive Vice President James A. Middleton, who previously supervised ARCO's Alaska operations, will continue to be responsible for ARCO's two key downstream units -- ARCO Products Co. and ARCO Transportation Co. He will also oversee ARCO Coal Co., where he formerly served as president, and ARCO Aluminum Inc. ARCO Coal Co. and ARCO Aluminum Inc. had previously reported to Wade.
In a separate announcement, Wade said he has assigned Marlan W. Downey, ARCO senior vice president and president of ARCO International Oil and Gas Co., to be responsible for key exploration decisions in Alaska. Downey will remain AIOGC president.
"Since the sizes, costs, and risk characteristics of our Alaska and international prospects cover the same broad spectrum, it makes sense to manage these portfolios together," said Wade, a former president of ARCO Alaska Inc. "Marlan will play a critical role in the allocation of available exploration capital and judging the relative desirability of spending among the upstream companies."
