MAN FOUND DEAD WAS STRANGLED, POLICE REVEAL; MAN HELD OVER DEATH OF SIMON.

A MAN found dead at a house in Merseyside was strangled, police said.

Simon Makin, 35, was discovered by officers in a house in Shelley Street, Bootle, on Thursday, at 7.30pm, after police received a tip-off.

A post-mortem carried out yesterday found Mr Makin was strangled to death. A 31-year-old man from Seaforth arrested on suspicion of Mr Makin's murder remained in police custody last night. Officers investigating the murder said Mr Makin and the man in custody were known to one another. Neighbour Sarah Irvine, 31, said: "Simon was a really nice man who never did anyone any harm. "I cooked him meals sometimes - he used to live in Seaforth but moved into this street a few months back. "Last time I saw him was three weeks ago, but my partner saw him going into his house three days ago. He always said hello." The mum-of-one said Mr Makin led a quiet life and "did not give anyone any trouble". Another neighbour said Mr Makin lived with the previous occupier of the house and helped care for him when he was dying of cancer. He stayed there after the occupier died in July. Detective Inspector Dave Keegan, of Merseyside police, said: "We believe the victim and the man we have arrested knew each other. We are now trying to establish the movements of both men before this incident." Call police on 0151- 777 3165 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
