MAMMOTH MICRO PRODUCTIONS ANNOUNCES INTEGRATION WITH LEADING AUTHORING AND PLAYBACK TOOLS FOR SONY MMCD

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Mammoth Micro Productions today announced that PlayXA(TM), the company's cross-platform family of multimedia playback applications, is now integrated with the most popular publishing applications that run on the Sony Multimedia Compact Disc (MMCD) Player: Dataware CD Answer, IBM Portable Linkway, Microsoft Multimedia Viewer Publishing Toolkit 2.0, and the Sony Electronic Publishing Corp. (SEPC) Bookware.
PlayXA's strength is its use of CD-ROM XA (Extended Architecture) interactive streaming technology to overcome limitations found in other CD-ROM formats. The benefits for multimedia title publishers who develop for the MMCD are many. They can now combine the richness of high-impact CD-ROM XA multimedia, with the power of database programs, full-text, retrieval applications, hypertext and desktop authoring tools. And, once a title is developed for the MMCD, the same disc can be played on MPC machines, MS-DOS, the IBM OS/2-based Ultimedia, and Microsoft Windows.
"CD-ROM XA streams conquer the present performance limitations of other CD-ROM formats because there is no need to constantly seek multimedia data stored in multiple files, which results in noticeable delays during viewing," stated Bob Ogdon, Mammoth co-founder and co-chairman. "Interactive streaming playback is immediate, so there is no waiting for files to load. The result is a smooth and seamless flow of multimedia elements and much faster performance."
Applications such as information kiosks, corporate training, interactive learning and commercial publishing are significantly enhanced by seamlessly incorporating CD-ROM XA streams. The end result is more compelling and sophisticated applications that tell a better story for the viewer. This is because PlayXA is able to provide tightly synchronized video and audio, immediate playback, stereo-quality audio, multiple audio channels (16) that can play multilingual applications, and longer continuous unbroken multimedia sequences (up to 18 minutes in length).
"Mammoth and Microsoft have been collaborating for the past year to provide a complete multimedia publishing solution," said Raghav Kher, Microsoft Viewer product manager. "This solution combines Mammoth's Studio XA and PlayXA applications with Viewer, which seamlessly integrates hypertext search and retrieval capabilities in an interactive streaming environment."
Previously, this level of sophisticated playback presentation and interaction was only available on a desktop computer that required a high level of robust hardware and computer memory. Mammoth's technology is bringing this level of quality to the Sony MMCD, a consumer electronics device with modest hardware and memory capabilities. Even on such a minimally configured machine, PlayXA delivers the same high- quality, high-performance multimedia that only interactive streaming technology can provide.

Additionally, the company announced that PlayXA will also integrate with Folio Corp.'s FolioViews 2.5 for the MMCD by the end of June 1993.
