MALIBU COMICS UNVEILS 'STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE' COMIC BOOK SERIES WITH LARGEST-EVER PRINTING OF ANY 'STAR TREK(R)' COMIC BOOK TITLE

 `Entertainment Tonight(R)' Co-Host John Tesh to `Guest'
As Starship Captain in First Two Issues of New Series
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- This week, Malibu Comics is unveiling its much-anticipated new comic book series based on Paramount Pictures' hit show, "Star Trek(R): Deep Space Nine(TM)," it was announced today by Scott Rosenberg, president of the rapidly growing comic book publishing company.
Based on widespread interest in the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" comic book series, heightened when a special eight-page preview of the new title appeared this June in the debut issue of the comic book magazine, Hero Illustrated, Malibu Comics will launch its latest release with a printing in excess of 400,000 copies, representing the largest printing of any "Star Trek"-derived comic book title to date.
Beyond featuring the regular cast and setting featured on the syndicated series, the first two issues of the new "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" comic book line will offer the likeness of "Entertainment Tonight" co-host and noted musician John Tesh in the guise of "Capt. Johnson" of the Federation starship, the U.S.S. Armstrong. Comic book writer Mike W. Barr, who spent considerable time on the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" set to ensure the authenticity of Malibu Comics' new series, notes that Tesh's character plays a pivotal role in the two debut issues, and does not constitute only a cameo. A long-time "Star Trek" enthusiast, Tesh has appeared as a Klingon in an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation(R)."
Malibu Comics, a leader in the realm of television and motion picture-inspired comic books, will publish full-color "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" comics on a monthly basis. The company will occasionally create special issues and independent "mini-series" based on the show as well, most likely for publication on a quarterly basis.
To be sold at stores and newsstands nationwide, and also available on a direct-mail basis, the new "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" comics are being edited by Tom Mason, creative director of Malibu Comics. In addition to Barr, the creative team includes artists Gordon Purcell and Terry Pallot.
"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," entering its second season shortly, stars Avery Brooks and Rene Auberjonois. The series takes place at the same time as "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and revolves around the inhabitants (including a "shape shifter," played by Auberjonois) of a space station located near a "wormhole" which provides a critical and coveted pathway to other galaxies.
Under the company's arrangement with Paramount Licensing Group, Malibu Comics will be able to create all-new stories and adapt actual scripts from the series. Like the show itself, the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" comic book series -- which will remain consistent with the characters and storyline of the television series -- can feature crossover visits from Capt. Picard, Q and other characters familiar to fans of "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
Based in Westlake Village, Calif., Malibu Comics is a division of the multimedia Malibu Comics Entertainment, also comprised of Malibu Interactive, a top creator and developer of video games such as "Batman Returns." One of the nation's most successful comic book publishers, Malibu Comics most recently launched the popular and acclaimed "Ultraverse" line, entailing a whole new "universe" of superheroes created by several of the industry's most successful artists and writers. Beyond regular installments of its new "Ultraverse" line, the company publishes numerous comic books spanning such stylistic realms as humor, parodies, horror, science fiction, superheroes, adventure, action and fantasy.
Authorized film and television-based titles published by the privately held Malibu Comics include "I Love Lucy," "The Three Stooges," "Planet of the Apes," "Alien Nation" and "Perry Mason."
